Unit History "People Mentioned in the Story" tags

I'm newly called as the ward history specialist, and I'm having difficulty with the "People Mentioned in the Story" tags. If I type a name or names in that field is something supposed to happen? Is the ward directory supposed to pop up so I can select the member's name from a list? If I simply type in the names and either save or publish, nothing seems to be saved in relation to those mentioned in the story. Am I doing something wrong?
