Out of ward members

Post by ecwyatt »

Recently our ward has had an individual fill in as a substitute. This individual does not live in our ward boundaries and their records are in another state. The person visits often as their parents and siblings live in our ward. This individual grew up in our ward. It seems odd that this individual has in the past month in a half been asked to fill in as Sunday school leader, teach Priesthood and give a talk in sacrament meeting. All I have found pertaining to something related to speakers in church is:

29.2.1.4
Selecting Speakers
The bishopric selects speakers for sacrament meeting. Most often they invite ward members, including youth and children…

This also links to:
38.8.18
Guest Speakers or Instructors
For most Church meetings and activities, speakers and instructors should belong to the local ward or stake.
A guest speaker or instructor is someone who does not belong to the ward or stake. The bishop’s approval is required before a guest speaker is invited to a ward meeting or activity…

I feel this shouldn’t bother me however I have lived in this ward for several years, almost 10, and there are numerous individuals I’ve never heard speak or teach a lesson. But this individual and his family are heard from quite regularly. The family this individual is from, holds or has held numerous leadership callings in the Ward, I don’t want to give too much info as it might sound ‘envious’ it’s just I don’t know if this is part of the reason the person has been asked so much lately, when there are numerous members of the Ward who have never had these opportunities.

One thing to keep in mind is that most ward leaders have exactly the same desire as what you describe, to actively involve all ward members in contributing to meetings and callings. Yet often there are members who decline opportunities to participate in these ways, and there are a myriad of reasons why that might occur. And when this happens, it's unlikely that general members will know about these details -- and to our "outside eyes" it appears that these members are being left out, when in reality the leaders would be happiest if all members were participating.

That said, if you are aware of any member who does feel left out, it's quite possible that their leaders are not aware of this. In those cases, I'd always encourage the member who feels left out, to meet with a leader (RS President, Bishop, etc) and express their desires. I know that whenever I've served in a leadership position where I've had the opportunity to invite other members to participate, there's always things I don't recognize, and having member input is a really great help.
