An alternative to your approach is to use a spreadsheet. Because I found I needed to manipulate data in more ways than MLS permitted, whenever we received a donation slated for a scout camp, I entered the name of the donor, the name of the boy, the date and amount of the donation and, if necessary, the quorum of the boy. All donations were made into a single account named "Other:Camp:Scout Camp 2010."

In the left of the screen that opens, select the source(s) and amount(s) and on the right the destination(s) and total(s). The total on the left screen should match the total on the right. The money will be moved from the source(s) on the left to the destination(s) on the right.

More info can be found on this wiki page.
So when you transfer the funds within the same major category (Other, Budget, Missionary, etc.) then you don't have to go back and change the donation records? How would you know "whose" money you are transferring in that case if they were "Other" funds (these technically do not belong to the Church)?

If you are cutting a check, you have transferred everyone's, correct? Anyone not able to attend the camp should get a refund.

These funds most definitely DO belong to the Church, although there may be some cases where some refunds may need to be issued, according to Church policy.

In some situations, a transfer may be appropriate. You'd only need to change the donation if you discover that you credited the donation to the wrong category.
