Spam Attack - Community To The Rescue

This morning at about 6:49 AM MST we had a spammer post spam on our forums. By 7:15 AM we had a user notify us about the spam and soon thereafter it was completely removed and the spammer was banned from the site. The spam messages sat on the site for 26 minutes at a time of very low traffic to the site. I'm very encouraged and grateful for a wonderful community that helps us keep these forums open for immediate communication without having to go through moderation. However I do realize that there are some that may not know how to report problems that they see on the site. So I thought I would write this post to help educate people on what to do if they see inappropriate content posted.

First off, if you are wondering what is appropriate or inappropriate, please review our terms of use and code of conduct documents. These are the same documents that everyone is supposed to have reviewed and agreed to before creating their account.

If you see a post that you feel is inappropriate here is the actions that you should take. Next to each post at the left you will see this Image image. All you need to do is to click on this icon. When you do so, you will see a form where you can fill in a message as to why you are reporting the post. Once a post has been reported, emails are sent to the moderators of the forum that the post is in. Moderators then will move the post to a private "moderator" section for review and possible discussion. At this point the post is no longer visible to the public. Once the post is moved to the private moderator forum, we will take the corrective action, which most of the time involves banning the user from the forums so that if the spammer attempts to spam using the same username, they are prevented from logging in.

Our best defense against inappropriate posts and spamming is our community members. Thank you for doing such a great job at keeping these forums on topic and helpful. Drop me a line if you have suggestions for improvements or would like to help.

deleted posts still visible on home page

As of Sunday morning, 10:55am PST, two spam posts that have apparently been deleted are still visible in the list of four most recent posts on the home page. It might be a good idea to purge spam postings from that list, too.

(If I counted correctly, it will take two more postings after this one to move the spams off the bottom of the list.)

I'll need to look into that. Thanks for pointing it out.
