Automated Indexing of Handwritten Records

Historically, there have been active research and some development of automated indexing of handwritten documents. Primarily, from what I have yet observed, this work has been primarily in software although, I wonder if there are opportunities for more in this domain? I wonder if there is active interest or projects that are being considered within this domain ?
