Talk:MLS export language dependencies

Is this the most practical format?

I filled in the information for German, but it was a tedious process. The wiki format isn't the greatest for copying information from a spreadsheet. I wonder if it might be more helpful to just create a spreadsheet that would have separate tabs for each table's information, and a row for each language. That would be easier to create, easier to maintain, and easier to use when someone actually wants to use this information. If we were to end up with any significant portion of the 20+ languages supported by MLS, this wiki format would become quite unwieldy.

The only downsides to a spreadsheet are that it is not as visible, and it doesn't have the nice history and diff capabilities of the wiki. But I still think we're better off with a spreadsheet. Thoughts? -- Aebrown 06:48, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Some thoughts: Perhaps someday we will get to the point where each language will stand on its own with a distinct clerk wiki. The portion of the page you created in German would then appear as a separate page in a German clerk wiki. In such a case, a spreadsheet might not be needed. In general, native speakers of each language would translate and enter the information on the wiki pages. Petersenga 20:10, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps we will get to that point, but that's a long time in the future. In any case, the impetus for this information is to support developers of tools that use the MLS export files. It could be desirable for such tools to work for non-English clerks. Such developers would need the information for all languages that they want to support. And that information could be helpful long before we have a critical mass of foreign-language clerks to support entire wikis in languages other than English. -- Aebrown 20:59, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

I went ahead and added a spreadsheet (File:MLS-Export-Languages.xls) and removed the wiki tables. I found that I can create a new language in about half an hour using the spreadsheet, but it takes well over twice as long to do it in wiki tables. It will make maintenance much easier.

If anyone feels strongly about the wiki table format, they are welcome to grab the tables from the history for this article, and add the data for the new languages to them. But there are already 5 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese), and I think that the width of the tables will already be unreasonable.

This is a good start for what I imagine are the most common languages in the Church. If someone feels strongly about another language, I could add it, but unless I hear otherwise, I'll pause for now and see if these are useful. I also anticipate that MLS 3.1 will cause some changes pretty soon.... -- Aebrown 06:10, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
