Recording full-time missions

CottrellS added a section on recording full-time missions that seems mostly superfluous to me. I have never had to record a full-time mission on a membership record, since the membership record is automatically updated by the administration office. Since I'm not at the ward level now, I'm not sure just how quickly this occurs, but it definitely does happen. It seems to me that the advice to manually update records is problematic, since a clerk's update may not match the spelling of the official record update.

What I am reporting is the procedure in the United States. Could it be that Steve is reporting how it works in the UK? If so, we need to change the wording to reflect this. -- Aebrown 13:04, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Alan, you are right. I believe that the mission fields will eventually be automatically updated, but there is a delay. In the stake where I live, there are two members being set apart as full-time missionaries this week. I can keep an eye on how long it takes to update.
Adding this information does not produce a warning like the ones given when local units go to add baptism or temple ordinance information. I feel it is appropriate for clerks to go ahead and update the record for set-apart full-time missionaries, once the setting apart has occurred.
The spelling isn't an issue as the fields can only be populated from pick lists. --Steve 14:24, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
I have amended the article to reflect the different policies within and outside the US and Canada. These are given in Membership Policy part of MLS Help. --Steve 20:56, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Inside the US and Canada, the mission is recorded after the missionary leaves the MTC. This is per the Missionary Department and I think this page should be updated to reflect this policy as it might be confusing. --Caleb 15:47, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Steve did quote the MLS help file accurately. For most missionaries speaking a foreign language, there's not much difference between "two months" and "leaves the MTC." If indeed the mission is recorded after only three weeks for English-speaking missionaries (when they leave the MTC), then the MLS help file needs to be corrected. The MLS help file is an official source, whereas the second-hand report from the Missionary Department -- although it may be more accurate -- doesn't seem as official. Personally, I don't see that it's all that confusing. If clerks in the US and Canada know that the record will be updated automatically, and they expect it to happen within two months, and in some cases it happens a few weeks earlier than that, why would that be a problem? In the paragraph that refers to the record being created for the child if there is no record, the policy states that both parents must consent to have the record created. I feel that this should be included here as to not contradict the Handbook. --Caleb 20:08, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
