Question on keeping the Tip's original name?

Some of the posted tips do not show the original title of the tip. I like the titles that show now because they give a better description of the contents. Since this page is specifically for the Tips of the Week, should we keep the original title of the tip? Any thoughts or suggestions? -- Birdld 10:35, 13 May 2009

The goal of the wiki is to create well-organized, helpful content. So I think we should select the best title possible, regardless of what the original Tip of the Week was titled. If we want to tie the wiki article back to the original TotW, we can always put a little note in the body of the article such as "This tip was originally sent on 5 May 2009 in an MLS message titled 2008 Year-End." -- Aebrown 17:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Duplicate Content

Why are the Tips of the Week being added to the wiki? I don't think this question has been well considered. At this point, it appears to me that TotW are being blindly added without considering if the content is already in the wiki. Specifically, we have the recently added Reconciliation Problems with a Returned Check which mostly duplicates Common_Problems_with_Reconciliation, and "2008 Year-end" which mostly duplicates Year End Donations, and Melchizedek Priesthood Ordinance Record which contains content that overlaps Recording Ordinances#Conferring the Priesthood and Ordaining to an Office.

Furthermore, except for categorization, these articles are not being integrated in the wiki. They contain terms that should have wikilinks, and there are obvious See Also links missing as well.

It appears that some of the tips were added to direct people to helpful wiki articles, but that others were added to simply make a copy of a TotW that was sent as an MLS message. If the latter is the intent, I disagree. In my opinion, if content is missing from the wiki, it should be added to existing pages where it makes sense, or if the topic is completely missing, a new article should be added. Then we can add an item to the Tip of the Week page that links to that new or updated content. -- Aebrown 19:35, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree. The tips page does not need to be a comprehensive list of every tip ever published. We should use it to highlight important and timely issues. The tip should never be more than a teaser that directs readers to the main article. Also, older tips can be retired if they are no longer timely. Lindsayre 19:52, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. I agree to a certain extent. We do occasionally receive calls from clerks seeking to find a copy of an old tip. We can email the tip to the clerk individually and fulfill the need. Although, it's also an opportunity to share the wiki and direct them here.
I like the idea of having some type of archive that the clerks can access previous tips. There has been a conscious effort by Local Unit Support to pull information from the wiki and send it as a TOW. That's why some of the more recent tips link to another page of the wiki. That won't always be the case though.
If the consensus is that they're not necessary, we can find a different way to integrate them into the content of the wiki. But on the other hand, if we have a link from the main page for TOW's then the expectation is that the content is the recent TOW's. Levi 16:17, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
I can see some value in an archive of the TOWs. My concern has been that this page seemed not to have a consistent purpose -- some of it seemed to be pure copies of the MLS Message TOWs, but other parts seemed to be wiki-oriented. If we want a TOW archive, then any wiki article that is specifically an archived TOW should be clearly labeled as such. This would involve at the very least a category (Category:Tip of the Week) and a consistent title pattern (such as "Tip of the Week: 2008 Year-end 2008"]) and perhaps a template for consistently referring to the date (such as a box that says "This Tip of the Week was sent as an MLS message on 8 May 2009"). The category page would provide a mechanism for linking to every single TOW, whereas the Tip of the Week article could highlight a few timely tips.
Such an archive would have its own rules. For example, it would probably not be appropriate to edit the text of such articles (but it would be good to add wikilinks, templates, See Also, categories, etc.). One concern with an archive would be tips that become obsolete or flat out wrong as MLS evolves. But I suppose we could choose to delete (or edit) such articles, rather than having a slavish adherence to maintaining a complete archive.
We should make sure that the content exists somewhere else in the normal structure of the wiki (which would probably be linked to from the TOW). I don't like the idea of the particular structure of a TOW (which is entirely appropriate for an MLS message) to dictate the structure of wiki articles. But if we separate TOWs as I proposed above, I think it could work. -- Aebrown 16:46, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for the excellent feedback. I agree that the TOWs need to be available to the clerks and I like the link from the main page organizing them as TOWs. I think we should better integrate the tips to the existing wiki content versus creating a page solely for that week's tip. I agree that maintaining an exact archive of the TOWs would be a nightmare. If we simply link the tip to relevant information on the wiki, then the clerk will always have access to the most current information and it will evolve with the rest of the wiki content. I think we're headed in the wrong direction here. I think it's wrong to say that "a clerk is looking for an old tip of the week" - he's really not. And for the Support team to " the tip to the clerk individually and fulfill the need" is the wrong approach. He's looking for the answer to a question. He may have a vague recollection that the answer was once available as a tip, but that doesn't mean we should help him find the old tip. We should help him find "The Answer," which is available in a wiki article. Also, I don't think the tip of the week page should ever have more than five or six tips on it. It's getting longer and that's why we're feeling the urge to call it an archive, but that's the wrong direction, too. The purple boxes look nice, but I would like to propose a different structure. If we were to use regular wiki headings, the tips would take less space vertically, and the big benefit is that the tip titles would then automatically be collected into a Table of Contents at the top, which would make it easier to scan the topics to find a helpful topic. It would also make the tips a bit easier to create, since we wouldn't have to deal with the {{Box}} template syntax. Thoughts? -- Aebrown 19:02, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
