Power strips for computer systems

There are power poles at each of the back corners of our meetinghouse lot. One year lightning hit at or near one of the poles. The cable line between the two poles vaporized and completely disappeared. On another occasion, a lightning strike welded the incoming cable connection to the cable modem, and the cable connection to the firewall. We had to use wire cutters to separate the cable and boxes.

One of the three switches attached to the modem also fried, although there was no apparent physical damage. We wound up replacing it simply because it no longer worked.

If the lighting strike was close enough to do physical damage, I don't know as there's much you can do. But good surge suppression will help stop the weaker ones.

Before we became part of the Internet world, lightning strikes used to take out either the phone system (back when we had those) or the satellite receiver. I think it is just one of the perks of being the tallest building at nearly the highest location in the neighborhood.
