Webcast Viewing State

Post by mdw240 »

I have been searching but haven't found a list to understand the "viewing state" on the reports available after each of the webcast activities. I expect "Live" means they connected and were successful during the broadcast but does a status of "Pre-Event" mean they were stuck or just that they tried prior to the event starting. We are trying to determine if there are certain status results on the "viewing state" report that would encourage us to follow up with those members to help them complete their connection or suggest other actions. If there is a list somewhere with the status options and meanings that would be greatly appreciated.

Glad you brought this up, I totally agree. It's nice to be given some of the raw information the church collects for each viewer, but it would be much more helpful if we knew what all the fields represented.

Device Type, OS, Browser, IP Address, and ISP are understood.

Buffer Duration:
Buffer Health:
Is a low number better, or a high number?

Bitrate Playback:
Bitrate Download:
What's the difference and why are they often zero?

Encoder Bitrate
Obviously, "N/A" for viewers.

Dropped Frames:
Obviously, lower is better.

Connected Duration:
Does this reset when a viewer refreshes their browser, or is it additive? Does a whole new entry get created with a browser refresh?

Viewing State
I've seen "Pre Event", "Live" and "Post Event". Are there others? What are the triggers for each?

Finally, if we we're going to do any work looking for trends, we REALLY need the data in a downloadable format, such as comma or tab delimited.
So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

Based on my personal observation, I believe the Viewing State shows at what point the visitor was viewing the webcast last. Those who join during the Pre-Event have that status, but it changes to Live when the Pre-Event period ends. I do not see Post Event because we never get that far.

Another clue is that if you are Live and you see a viewer with Pre-Event, they probably dropped out before the event went Live. If you click on the name of the viewer, you will see the number of minutes they were connected. So in the middle of a Live event, when I see a viewing status of Pre-Event, clicking on the name usually shows that they were only connected for a few minutes, none of which were after the event went Live.
