Media Library Resources list

Post by Magilanehila »

I know I have seen a suggested or approved “list” of resources that can be made available in local unit media centers / libraries. I’ve recently taken on a calling including updating these materials as our building re-opens. Can folks share any links to official lists / guidance regarding building and maintaining the media center? Are there any preferential channels setup for material acquisition, e.g. with Deseret Book?

Separately, what have been the best practices on affordable and practical implementation of technology solutions for improving learning? I would have liked to get a streaming device and put it on a different subnet with highly restricted authorization, but based on what I’ve seen this does not seem advisable. What materials, devices, capabilities are surprising you with frequency of use / non-use?

Helpful suggestions are always welcome, even if they feel a little non sequitur.

Thanks in advance.

A list can be found here: Meetinghouse Library Materials

Note that network options are limited. You can put a device on the local network and it would only be available in that meetinghouse. Any authentication you set up would have to be independent of the Church Account.

I have been charged in my ward with doing a complete inventory of the library and after that working with the other two units to identify and dispose of all outdated or unauthorized material in the library. We also want to improve our AV equipment/process. We are still working on potential solutions there. We only have two TVs (one larger, one smaller), and neither are smart tvs so can't directly do casting. We hope to be able to add some permanent TVs to a few key classrooms (Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society rooms in particular), but are early in the process. We also are looking into much smaller TV carts as ours were designed for CRT TVs and are too big and take up too much room. Teachers tend not to use the TVs because there is no system in place to ensure who would get the TVs on a particular day. Why would they prepare a lesson with the TV in mind unless they knew for sure they had use of it?

As to source, the only source for materials for the library is the church itself. No other source is allowed (such as Deseret Book.). Any materials from other sources are to be discarded. We are also supposed to get rid of all outdated and obsolete material, which is about 90% of what is in the library, which is okay. We need to change with the times and do what will better support teachers in the future. A large collection of manuals is no longer the way. Also, all VHS tapes are supposed to go. DVDs are probably not in use either since virtually everything is available to watch via streaming or playing back from a tablet, phone, or labtop now via the internet. We are working with our teachers to develop a system whereby they can use the AV equipment, or their own tablets, etc. I'm not sure where this will lead yet as Covid put a monkey wrench into the process.

TVs fall under the FM group. I suggest you talk with the physical facilities representative. If you mount TV, you may find them unceremoniously removed as the building doesn't belong to the ward, but to the FM group.

I wouldn't discard the DVDs until your internet proves itself. It may not be up to the task of reliably streaming video on a Sunday with other uses going on. It's generally advised to download the videos ahead of time.

And please remember that we do not need TVs (with tuners). All we need are monitors with speakers. We recently purchased three 27-inch monitors with internal speakers. We also have two Chromecast devices for the Android folks, and three Thunderbolt-HDMI adapter cables for the Apple folks. And we have an old WD Live TV media player for everyone else, so they can play videos from flash drives.

My recent hobby is purging LDS libraries. I have complete seven and have four others coming up. The new resource list is available at LDS.org...enter 'meetinghouse resource center' (no longer library). The current list online is 2,5 pages and is orange at the top. In addition to the items on that list which should be ordered (You can skip things related to the hymnbook that is changing), you may include anything currently sold by the distribution center (see list below). Keep these if you have them, no need to buy them.

Will the revised Old Testament Stories be available in a digital pdf?

https://store.churchofjesuschrist.org/u ... 85062117-1

Old Testament Stories
Colorfully illustrated stories from the Old Testament are written on a basic reading level. This book helps parents and teachers teach the scriptures to children. They can share their testimonies and encourage children to seek their own testimonies. Includes glossaries and photographs.

I don't know specifically about a PDF, but if you're looking for a digital copy in general, you can find the new Old Testament Stories in Gospel Library (under Library > Come, Follow Me > Individuals and Families, OR Library > Children > Scripture Stories).

Sometimes Gospel Library Online has PDFs, but not in this case. It might be worth sending feedback on the Church website requesting that a PDF be added.
