Basically the same question was asked nearly a year ago. Please see this page: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/stu ... s?lang=eng If that does not resolve the question for you, please counsel with your bishop or branch president.

I nave the same question. I spoke to my Bishop and he said to pay what I feel is right. That wasn't a big help.

Your bishop is limited in that he is only allowed to say what the Lord said in Doctrine and Covenants 119:4, that tithing is one-tenth of all your interest annually, which is understood by the First Presidency to mean income.

So with regard to Social Security, is your increase the difference between what you paid into the system over the years and what you are receiving now or is it everything that you receive this year? You have to prayerfully decide that for yourself.

It is actually fairly easy to calculate how much you have paid over the years through withholding and compare it to how much you are receiving. When I was retiring and ran the math, I was astonished with the results. I decided personally that I did not wish to get out of the habit of paying tithing during that fairly short period of time. I have been blessed throughout my life and always been at peace being generous with the Lord.

But that was my own personal decision, confirmed by the Spirit to me alone. Your decision may be different. I am certain that as you prayerfully make your decision, the Spirit will also help you to know you have made a good choice. If you decide and then are not comfortable, it would be time to reevaluate that decision until the Spirit helps you to be at peace.

This is a paragraph from Pres. Ezra Taft Benson's book "An Enemy Hath Done This. " Read it and then decide whether you should pay taxes on Social Security.

"Already, a young man with a family can get far more for his money from a private pension program than he can from the Social Security system. The break-even point, according to estimates by Professors James M. Buchanan and Colin B. Campell, is 39 years of age. And it advances further with each new increase of benefits. At the present time anyone born after 1927 will pay more into Social Security than ge stands to get out of it.

While the quote was true when it was written, it is not true today. When I started receiving Social Security payments, I had received everything I paid into the system within 18 months. I decided to consider everything I received after that as "increase", and applied Doctrine and Covenants 119 to the situation.

The greatest gift of all, agency, allows you to determine for yourself what you will decide to do.

I made a tithing donation about 15 minutes ago and printed it out and realized that i made a $ 7000.00 fat offering rather than a $70.00 donation . How do I correct this?

From the donation page help page:

I just submitted my donation request and noticed I made a mistake. How can I cancel my donation request?

As long as the Church hasn’t already processed your donation, you may still be able to cancel the donation request. You can cancel the donation request a few different ways: Click the x icon next to the donation that is still in “Processing” status, or click the donation, go to the yellow slip, and click the Cancel Donation Request button at the bottom of the slip. The donation request will be canceled and deleted from the system.
