"Allergy Room" for Local Meetinghouses

Post by kristaanncook »

In one of my branches, some years back, there was a specially equipped room for a man with severe allergies. It allergy proofed the experience for him.

Does anyone know of anything similar?

Is there a process for requesting such a room?

How would you go about equipping it technologically?

Does anyone know?

There's a current situation in my ward, so that's why I'm asking.

We'll see if others have current experiences with this, I know there are many members with these types of issues with church attendance. One thing I'd note is that in the past few years, sacrament (and other church) meeting broadcasts have become readily available from home, something that was not previously possible in most places before the pandemic. So for many situations, the member may be able to participate virtually and have the Bishop's permission for the sacrament ordinance to be administered at their home, which avoids the time and resources required to set up and maintain allergy-proofing at the meetinghouse. And it may be that the FM Group has made policy changes due to the widespread availability of remote worship.

I would expect that if building modifications were desired, the Bishop would bring this up with the Stake President since he's over the buildings in the Stake (or the Bishop could go through the Stake PFR who would then talk with the Stake President). And the Stake President would then contact the FM Group to initiate discussions about making any proposed changes. Hopefully there are Forum members who can share current-day experiences regarding the available options for what you're asking about, and current FM Group policies.

Thanks, I know about the remote options, but since this woman has a husband and several children, staying home isn't a good option for her. If she's at the building, she can attend and serve in person. Remote really limits her options. Right now, she stays on the fringes or goes where she might be able to hear and stay away from the allergens that trigger her condition.

I'd still like to hear from anyone that has direct experience with these rooms/technology. I'm doubtful that local leaders have any knowledge to even look into this possibility. I wouldn't be aware of it myself except that for that one experience in the small branch.

Which might well have been a one-off. I'd suggest reaching back to that small branch and find out more.

You could also ask the Physical Facilities Rep to ask FM if there's anything like this.

No one involved in the situation in the small branch that had this allergy room is still around or still alive. I'd prefer to hear about something more recent and hopefully relevant.

I'm aware of the "chain of command" for facilities stuff, but I have my reasons for pursuing a more indirect route at this time. Once I gather information, then I'll invoke it.

I'm still interested in anyone who has any current experience or information on these rooms.
