Language on Gospel Library

Post by mariannordgren »

Hi! I am trying to help a friend change the language on Gospel Library to French so that they can read the scriptures and enjoy the app in their language. Also, if there is a way to enjoy audio in that same language. Would anyone know how I can do that? If so, step by step instructions would be most helpful. :D

To get step by step instructions it would be helpful to provide the operating system for their device since the user interface for each system can be different. By default the app loads the language the device is set to. I use the Android version and the language can be changed by selecting the Library tab at the bottom of the screen, tap the vertical three dot menu on the top right of the screen, and tap Language (the 6th menu item on the list).

If your friend is fine with the app set to English, then it's pretty straightforward to listen to audio in another language. Whenever I have a page displayed (2 Nephi chapter 25, a talk from GenConf, etc), there's always a pop-up audio button that is used to play the audio. And with the app set to English, I can still show a page in any other language I choose. For my GL app, I select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner and then choose "Language". That displays a page that shows any currently installed languages, along with all the other potential choices. Simply select the language and the page will display the text in that language, and then if you select the pop-up audio button it will play the audio in that selected language.

If your friend also wants the entire app set to French, then following @jdlessley's instructions are appropriate. But even if the app is set to French, your friend could choose to play audio in another language (English, etc) by the same process, without having to change the entire app settings. The Gospel Library FAQ has a bit of explanation about this as well.

They have an iPhone. I tried helping them, and when I was able to change the language it only worked for a short time and then when I got out of the scriptures section it quickly went back to English. I have an Android phone as well and have never used an iPhone so it would be great if you would know how to keep it to French.

If you want French to be the default language for everything in the app, the best way to do that would be to change the language from iOS system settings.
1. Go to iOS Settings > General > Language & Region.
2. Add French as a language (if it's not already in the list).
3. Set French as your default device language for all apps, OR go to iOS Settings > Apps > Library > Language and set French as the default device language just for the Gospel Library app.
