Chromebook - Detailed steps to set up

Post by KeithCunningham »

Hello, my stake is beginning to use Chromebook for ward clerk and stake clerk computers. However, I've been reading the forum, and finding there are many things to consider. As a Stake Tech Specialist I'm responsible for setting up these Chromebooks. It seems, in order to actually save settings, etc., it must be done within an added person's account. However - these added accounts are no longer 'general' accounts, such as 'local clerk'.

It is unclear at this point all the things I need to consider, and in what order I should proceed, to ensure that the chromebook is set up, with needed accounts, and settings.

Does anyone out there have a detailed list of the things to consider, the steps, etc. to ensure proper set up and use?

Thank you for your help.

Are you aware of the Wiki section How-To Articles Chromebook on the Wiki page Meetinghouse Computers? Those articles should answer a lot of your questions.

Follow the steps in Enrolling a Chromebook.

You may need to jump to the bottom "Enrolling a Chromebook that has already been logged into by a user"
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

Yes, already reviewed all of that. I'm seeing in forum comments like, you have to add a person then set up a printer, or internet, or display, or other settings - otherwise if I sign in as a guest anything I set while in there as guest goes away. So - hoping to get a more detailed list of things I need to consider and the order to do them.

Make sure the posts you saw were for Chromebook. I went looking and didn't find much. Some units are getting Windows machines, and they follow a very different and traditional setup.

If you sign in and are the stake technology specialist, everything you set up will be saved. The best order is to have someone sign in first whose account will be saved. They set up the printer, etc. Then anyone who signs in later as a guest has access to those things.

The nice thing about it is that even of the unit deletes my account, or all accounts, or otherwise loses access to the Chromebook I can still sign in and help them, because of my STS calling. On the other hand, so can they. So a clerk is able to return everything to order if needed.

A user does not determine whether he signs in as a saved user or as a guest. The system determines that based on the calling the person signing in holds, and treats the account accordingly.
