We have a Senior Missionary couple from out of state moving into our ward. They want to be active in our ward but as Senior Missionaries, their records will stay in their home ward. They have asked us to create an out-of-unit record so they can access our ward members while serving their mission . I have added out-of-unit members to support shared auxiliary leaderships but they are for local members from the bar-bell ward where we have combined our youth programs. In this case the contact information remains the same.
My understanding is that senior missionary's records will remain in their home ward and adding them as out-of-unit members will allow them to be active in our ward activities but I don't know what happens when I include their local address when I add them as out-of-unit members.
Does anyone know if including their mission residence to the out-of-unit contact information will show up on our ward directory? Will it update their contact information in their home ward directory? Is there a way to add them as a household or do I have to create two separate records?

You can add them as a household (when added the second one you can choose the household in your ward they will be in). That household has its own address separate from their home ward's household.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is my assumption that the address I include when creating the out-of-unit record will not update the record in their home ward accurate?

Correct, it is a separate address.

Actually, from experience you can only add them as separate individuals, not a household. And the address you use for their mission address in your ward will not change the home address in their home ward.

Does the out of unit record allow the missionaries to see the records of the people in their stake they’re serving in?
I have a similar situation except for a YSA Bishop, who is effectively cut off from communication across the whole stake because all they can see in their Tools app is people in their YSA stake.
Does the out of unit record solve for this?
And by the way, where do you go to create one?

To create a Out of Unit record:
In Leader and Clerk Resources (aka LCR)
Click on Membership to open the drop-down menu
Click on Manage Out-of-Unit Member
Enter the member's MRN or Last Name, First Name
I find it best to use the members MRN
As I mention in an earlier post, DON'T try to merge two out of unit records into a household. If you do, it pulls the real record from the current unit and they become a full-fledged member in your unit.

Yes, YSA bishops (and other leaders) serving outside their home ward should generally keep their records in their home ward. They will still go to their home ward for temple recommend interviews, etc. In the YSA stake, you can create an out-of-unit member record for them and record their calling – then they'll be able to see information in the YSA stake, while retaining visibility in their home ward.robmerrill wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 7:31 am Does the out of unit record allow the missionaries to see the records of the people in their stake they’re serving in?

If I remember correctly (and assuming it hasn't changed since I was a YSA clerk), the YSA ward can create the out-of-unit membership record, but only the YSA stake can record his calling as bishop.

That bug is on their radar as is the one that doesn't let you add the second person to the first's household as you create the out of unit record.rwoodmansee wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 7:41 am As I mention in an earlier post, DON'T try to merge two out of unit records into a household.
