How to get MRN online

Church Account is the primary user account (user name and password) for accessing online Church resources. Church Account was formerly known as LDS Account. This forum is a space to discuss all things related to Church Accounts (registration, account recovery, user experience, vulnerabilities, etc.).

This is an important question for so many who were baptized but now not participating in a ward and either (a) do not know where their membership records reside, or (b) would prefer not to attract attention from local leaders. We see this often (including the first post in this thread) when someone would like to take full advantage of all the tools and experiences offered to Church members on FamilySearch. Telling them to look it up in Tools will not help either, because they can't sign into Tools without a Church account, which typically requires a membership record number. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
As russellhltn said, there isn't a self-service way to do this online. I don't know of any plans to create an online tool that would allow a member to look up their own record number. The problem of ensuring that the person on the other end of the wire is authorized for the data being requested is a difficult one to solve in this situation.

The FamilySearch use case you describe is a valid case -- I have had conversations today dealing with other steps for that exact use case once the MRN has been obtained.

The forum isn't the place to address that use case. Creating a path to allow non-participating members to get a membership record number without contacting local leaders would require a coordinated project between Membership, Identity, and Data Privacy, at the very least. That is going to be driven by a request through the business departments, not through a forum discussion.

One possible abuse would be to determine if someone is a member of the church or not. From past observation, the church rarely discloses membership status to third parties.

One has to wonder how motivated the business department would be to do that.

If you already have a member Church Account (a Church Account associated with your MRN) then you can log onto ChurchofJesusChrist.org and go to the Directory. Select "My Household" in the left column and under your name in the right column click the "Show Record Number" link.

However, if you do not have a member Church Account you will have to contact the ward clerk for your ward to get your MRN.

For the situation where you have been inactive for some time and may have moved you will need to find your home ward/branch and have the clerk move your record into the ward/branch. You can find your ward/branch and the contact number for the bishop or branch president in the Meetinghouse Locator. Type in your address in the search box. If you know your record is in that ward he can give you your MRN or give you contact information for your ward/branch clerk to help you get your record moved into the ward/branch and then give you your MRN.

No one here is able to look that up. Use the Meetinghouse Locator to find out what ward you live in now, and then you can ask them to pull in your membership record and that will have your MRN.

I am a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of the latter day Saints, and I'm the branch president of Malalaua.
So as the branch president I would like to have the members record book.

What "members record book" are you referring to? In many or most, perhaps all, areas, membership records and so forth are accessed and managed via computer, not by papers or paper books.

Have you asked your stake or district leadership or clerks for assistance? I'm not acquainted with details of how things work in districts, but in a stake the stake clerking staff is supposed to train the ward/branch clerks.

If you have needs that the local stake or district cannot solve, you could also call the Global Service Department.
