Synced Location Calendars Don't Show All Events That Are Shown on the Church's Calendar Website

Post by bobbyfox »

From what I have observed, there are two types of calendars - Location calendars (see attached "Location Calendars.JPG") and Organization calendars (see attached "Organization Calendars.JPG"). It seems that Location calendars contain events that are assigned to a specific location but not assigned to any organization. It seems that Organization calendars contain events assigned to an organization but which may or may not have a specified location.

When I view a Location calendar natively on the church's calendar website, I see all events from that specific Location calendar AND all events from any Organization calendars that specify that location in the event. This is a very important feature when trying to schedule an event at a building because you need to see if the building is already scheduled on ANY calendar. My concern is that when viewing a synced Location calendar on another app or website (e.g. Google Calendar or Outlook), I still see all events from that specific Location calendar, but I do not see any events from any Organization calendars that specify that location in the event. It would be very helpful if the Location calendar on the church's calendar website and the same Location calendar synced on another app or website showed exactly the same events.

Here is a practical example. Suppose there is a Location calendar called Stake Center and there is an Organization calendar called Young Women. There is an event on the Stake Center Location calendar called Wedding Reception. There is also an event on the Young Women calendar called Volleyball that specifies Stake Center as the location. When you view the Stake Center Location calendar natively on the church's calendar website, you will see both the Wedding Reception event and the Volleyball event. But when you view the synced Stake Center Location calendar on Google Calendar, you will only see the Wedding Reception event.

The location calendar will show any event assigned to that location. It could be an event scheduled on that specific calendar, or an organizational calendar event that specifies that location.

Last I knew, location calendars didn't sync despite the name showing up in other places. But that might have changed.

As you say, the location calendar is useful for seeing what time slots are available. It's also good for leaders like the building schedulers to keep an eye on things. But since I don't think you can schedule events anywhere except the web page, I don't know as having that calendar synced elsewhere else is that useful.

I'm personally leery about other uses for the location calendar. Allowing members to get the idea "if no one else is using it, then I can use it" can lead to problems.

I only recently noticed that Location calendars can be synced. I have attached another screenshot to show that the Create Group dialog provides Location calendars as options. And as I mentioned in the post, when I view synced Location calendars in another app (e.g. I use Google Calendar), it does indeed show events scheduled on that Location calendar. The purpose of the post is to point out the inconsistent behavior between Location calendars on the church's website and synced Location calendars on other apps, in the hope that it will be considered as a potential improvement to be made. It is my opinion that if synced Location calendars are provided, members who use them (regardless of why they are using them) will likely expect consistent behavior between the church website and the synced calendars. Thanks!
