In my case it seems that because there is no permission there is nobody responsible, which is worse? Does having edit rights make one responsible, or it does it just make one empowered? :P

If I uncheck the Stake calendar items from my preferences, there are no events registered this month except for next month I see an Elders quorum activity, so clearly my ward isn't using them very effectively.

Since I don't have any administrative rights to any calendars, let me ask this; is it possible to create a calendar for a "committee" and then just have members of that committee be able to see it on their calendar? Or are the all calendars available to all members in the ward? For example, I seem to have access to the all the various calendars of organizations (e.g. Relief Society, Young Men, Young Women, Ward Leadership Meetings, etc.). Is that just because the permissions in our ward are organized in that way? Obviously I can unchoose a calendar from my list and it will cease to show it to me; will it cease to send me notifications for events on those calendars that I have unchosen?

I can see that the Church Calendar has the potential to be a useful tool, but it definitely has some rough edges. Also, it does place additional burdens on whomever has the calling to assign permissions since it's yet one more thing that they have to do when someone is called.

Yes, an admin can create a private calendar and select who can see it. I'd recommend that for leadership calendars to keep track of their meetings but hiding them from the general membership to avoid confusion.

All non-private calendars are available to all the unit members. This includes allowing parents to see calendars that apply to their children.

That's done under the gear icon > Choose calendars.

Permissions are based on calling, not the individual. So once the schema is set up, it's self-managing as changes to callings are recorded.

I just wanted to add: Notifications require that:
  • The editor has set a notification for that event.
  • The user has enabled notifications in the calendar web page.
  • The user has enabled notifications for that calendar.
The last two settings can be found under gear icon > choose calendars.

Even then, various forum members have indicated that notifications can be iffy.

Calendar admin gives power over all unit calendars. Including YW, RS, EQ, etc.

Calendar editor for YM calendar(s) would be more appropriate. Even then, I'd consider which callings should have edit rights to avoid "if everyone is responsible, then no one is responsible".
Yes, as always, Russel finds the very very specific thing. If you need access to a certain calendar, you should ask to be added. My main point was to ask for all of the callings that need the access, rather than just yourself, just so it never has to have this issue in the future.

Normally I'm not super picky about the language, but here the differences were pretty big.

Good idea to look at the unit calendar permission policy as a whole. But that depends what's going on at the unit level. At the YM level, it might be easier to get permission for YM calendars and then be an example for the others rather than to push for the whole ward at once. But if someone is at the bishopric level, then pushing for whole ward makes sense.

Who are the admins? Is this a specific calling? For example, does the
Technology Specialist have the ability to create private and public
calendars? Or does only the bishopric have this ability?

In my case, the notifications seem to work fine. What's "iffy" is that
very few people in my ward are putting things on the calendar.

Who are the admins?
The default admins are:
Bishop
Bishopric First Counselor
Bishopric Second Counselor
Ward Executive Secretary
Ward Clerk
Ward Assistant Clerk
Acting Ward Leader
Ward Assistant Clerk--Finance
Ward Assistant Clerk--Membership
Email Communication Specialist

Any admin can add other admins by calling (custom callings included).
The callings above are for a ward. Substitute appropriate callings for a branch.

Because of this flexibility and the powers that an admin wields, caution in adding admins should be seriously considered. In our ward any admins to be added must get bishop approval first.

The STS can for stake calendars, but the WTS has no default rights to the ward calendar.

Is there a distinction between an admin and someone who has permissions
to manage a specific calendar? For example, can the Ward Mission Leader
be given permissions to manage just one calendar without granting full
administrative rights to all calendars?
