If a thread is over 1 year old it should be auto-closed to encourage people to start new threads. This avoids comments or resurrection of very old discussions.
The moderators and administrators have discussed this matter in the private moderator's forum a little over two years ago. Our administrators have looked into it and there is no automatic way to close threads. We deal case by case with resurrected old threads.
