MacPAF

A few of us who are on the Macintosh side of things use Reunion 8 but it has not been updated in a few years. We reviewed it on our website at http://www.maccompanion.com back in 2003 or 2004.

Logan Allred has been busy trying to get PAF functionality working in Mac OS X and is stuck at the beta 4 release and he asked for help. He uses Cocoa as the development app to do the "look-and-feel" of PAF for the Mac.

Not to try to make a nuisance of myself, but in case it might be helpful...

For those with X86-based Macs, there's a possibility the WINE program may be (close to) working well enough to run PAF itself. PAF 5 installs and runs very well on WINE on Linux. The AppDB page is at http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=1706. The WINE FAQ has a note since many months ago that estimated it was six months away from working pretty well on X86-based Macs.

Has somebody tried recently to use PAF 5 under WINE on an x86-based Mac?

Wine does run on Intel Macintosh computers running Mac OS X, but not very well. Right now it is only targeted at developers.

However, there are programs that will allow you to run Windows or Linux on you Mac such as Parallels, Q and Boot Camp.

Parallels runs windows so well, I've stopped using my PC. PAF works really well on it, the only downside is that your running it in windows and using a great deal of RAM to do it. Parallels recently added a feature called Coherence which basically allows you to run the windows apps right inside your mac desktop, however windows is still running in the background, it's just hidden. It's definately getting better!

There is also a product out there called crossover for the Mac which I think utilizes WINE. Has anyone tried this yet?

Crossover for Mac somehow slipped my mind when I posted my comment. So yes, Wine does run on Mac as long as you are running it through Crossover which costs money. I don't know how well it works. As for Parallels, I use it as my primary operating system at work and it is indeed very impressive. Parallels does cost money, but it is at least reasonably priced.

LOL, I just saw a screenshot of this in PCWorld magazine yesterday...and I must say it was quite disturbing! They had Safari running there on the OS X desktop with a Windows Media Player window right beside it. I was like, "Wait...what's going on?!"

Just Hearing the windows chime at Startup on the Mac is sort of freaky! But I've found it very useful. I can use google talk and PAF, and not to mention Spider Solitair!

They have also modified parallels so that It can utilize the Bootcamp Partition of the Mac, so if your using bootcamp to run windows you don't have to restart the machine and boot into windows. It's pretty nice, but It would be nicer just to have a native Mac version
