Setting Member Record as Private
Hi, I have read through several past forum posts about setting membership records to private but I haven't been able to find where to do it. Everything has said it is somewhere in membership information for the individual member, but I can't find anything in any of the sections that allows you to change privacy settings. This is my second week in the calling and I could really use some step-by-step help on this one.

Re: Setting Member Record as Private
A member can set their own privacy setting in the Directory on ChurchOfJesusChrist.org by finding their own household in the list, clicking the pencil icon and clicking the Privacy tab.
Leaders and clerks can no longer set privacy settings for other members on ChurchOfJesusChrist.org or is this ability available in LCR (at least not at this point). Currently the only way for leaders to set privacy options for other members is using Member Tools. On Android at least the steps are the same as above. I expect iOS is similar.

What you have just outlined for privacy settings does not work in reverse. I don't want privacy settings, but cannot get rid of them.

It should. However, you need to first check the "Household" privacy settings as individual members can't have a setting that's less private than the household limit.dianesower wrote:What you have just outlined for privacy settings does not work in reverse. There may still be an issue where adult "children" of a household are not able to set their own privacy.

Re: Setting Member Record as Private
Changing privacy settings is done the same whether setting the privacy setting to the most restrictive setting "Private" or to the least restrictive "Stake Visibility". Note there are household visibility settings and individual household member settings. The household visibility limits the maximum visibility for the individual settings. No other setting can be more widely visible than the household visibility limit. However, individual settings can be more restrictive.dianesower wrote:What you have just outlined for privacy settings does not work in reverse. If you changed your personal visibility settings to "Stake Visibility" you may need to check your household visibility setting. It may be set at the more restrictive "Ward Visibility" or even the most restrictive "Private".

Re: Setting Member Record as Private
I am frustrated with the UX design for privacy settings.
On the online Ward Directory and Map, I get the same orange coloring and padlock image regardless of whether an item is set to Ward Visibility or Private - Leadership Only. This makes it extremely difficult to know whether I can share a particular contact item/method with a fellow ward member or only ward leadership. I suppose I can safely assume anything orange and padlocked cannot be shared outside of my ward, except perhaps to Stake Leadership? But within my ward it is rather fuzzy without extra research. I would prefer a different color for each privacy level. I have not yet deduced the logic rules behind when a household is marked orange and when the household is colored normally, but some sub-items are marked orange when clicking into a household for further details.
On the Member Tools app, I have no visual indication of privacy settings at all. I have to edit individuals and navigate to the Privacy tab before being able to edit/view the privacy settings. I am with my phone accessing the app while attending to my calling much more often than I am on my laptop. I would prefer to have some color or other indication that a particular household's information is marked with a privacy setting rather than beginning with an editing workflow. A quick, visual cue that I should be cautious with sharing a particular member's contact information.

Those are excellent observations. I suggest also using the Feedback link to send this feedback to decision makers who might consider your feedback for future improvements.greenwoodkl wrote:I am frustrated with the UX design for privacy settings.

I am a member and have not set my phone number as "private" but it is. How do I get my phone number to show in the ward directory?

Depending on the area you live in, and in most places outside the U.S. and Canada, the default privacy settings are private. For those areas you must opt into having your contact information displayed.
Sign into your Church Account.
In the menu pane, scroll down to the Personal section and click Visibility.
After making changes click the Save button.
