Calendar Event Access

Post by lewtippett »

I placed a Stake Council meeting on the calendar. The event shows up in my Member Tools app calendar, but it does not show on the calendar of other stake council members including the stake president. When I look at my edit selection for the Tools calendar, I have an option to select Stake Council events, however, when I look at other stake council member phones, they do not even show an option to select Stake Council events for their calendar view. That is consistent for both iOS and Android devices. It appears to be a permissions issue. Is this a known app issue or is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?

BTW, my calling is stake executive secretary.

Thanks,
Lew Tippett

The other members will probably need to go to the calendar webpage, click "Choose calendars" in the upper left and make sure that calendar is turned on. That setting affects both the webpage and the sync.

And no, there's no way to control what calendars are turned on for individual members. Each member is completely responsible for selecting the calendars that apply to them.

Hello,

Most members I am assuming aren't using the online calendar under the lds.org login. I really think it is a great tool but if you don't make it easy and don't educate people won't use it. Unfortunately now that I just got called to Ward Clerk I am find that. We would like to start using but I am trying to make this as easy as possible to ward members to pull into their own phone calendars since that is the place people look for events in their life.

With all that being said I am hoping the church makes the option to "default" the calendar to the member's calendars that most apply to them at that time in their life. ie if I have one teenage daughter in a married couple family each member would have the appropriate calendar pushing to their phone. in this case the "young women, relief society, elder's quorum, and ward activities calendar" would be the default calendar for a parent of this family (not seeing young men or primary for example). Not seeing calendars that don't apply to that individual. Now I know they can log in and select the little "eye" to see specific calendars that apply to them and it pushes to their phone the calendars that apply to them but does the church have it on development scope in the near future to have the logic to push calendars that apply by default? It just saves every member the step of logging in and selecting their calendars. We could roll out these calendars to the ward alot easier by just giving them their unique calendar info for them to put in their phone.

Thanks for letting me know if this is easily possible.

IF this isn't possible in the near future is their step by step instructions with images of how to select your calendars that apply to you and then put it in your phone? A demo video and one page tutorial online would be amazing to give to members of this process from logging in and getting to the calendar, selecting your calendars you want pushed to phone and then how to setup in phone.

Thanks!

Just to make sure expectations are reasonable, this is a user-to-user discussion forum. Most likely, nobody with decision-making authority in the development area will ever see this thread. There are two potential methods for getting input to the decision makers: 1) use the 'feedback' button or link on the page or app; 2) tell your bishop or stake president and suggest he send the input up his chain of command.

Not terribly practical. The list of calendars is not standardized and the names are freeform titles. Someone would have to write a parser that can go though all the titles and figure out what it means. For example "Young Men", "YM Activities", "YM/YW" , "YM - Quorum 1" and so forth.

When you say "on their phone" are you talking about in Member Tools app, or in their personal calendar? The first is easy, the second one is do-able, but a bit harder.

Somethings to understand about the Google sync:
  • Google syncs once a day at a time of it's own choosing.
  • Google caches the data for a URL, so attempting to delete and re-add the URL will not get updated information.
  • Your Android phone syncs at a time of its own choosing with your Google account.
  • There's a 9 minute throttle on the URL. If you use the URL to get another download within 9 minutes of the last download, you'll get a blank list. This is tied to the account, so simply re-generating the URL won't get around that. If you have too many devices syncing too often, not all of them may be able to sync.
Bottom line, don't expect changes made the night before to show up on everyone's calendar. But if scheduling is done well ahead of time, it's usually good enough.
