Emailing from Tools App on iPhone

I have an iPhone SE (2nd generation), with the latest update, iOS 15.6.1. I am a counselor in our Elders Quorum, and wanted to send an email from the Tools app to a member of our quorum.
but was unable to. So I went to Help under More on the Tools menu, and clicked on Contact Us. I got the same message as when I was trying to email a ministering brother about his ministering assignment. The error message said, "Can't Send Email. You'll need to set up a mail account on your device before you can send email".

I use GMail on my iPhone. I am able to email from the GMail app just fine. I do not want to use iCloud or Apple mail. My GMail account (shuman2@gmail.com) is what I use for my Apple ID.
When I check my phone settings for the GMail app, it says it is my default email. Why does Tools not recognize my GMail account?
