Correcting my own membership record for posterity

Post by adamhaymond »

A few years ago I became aware that my own record is not complete. It lacks my ordination to the office of Deacon, and Teacher. It also lacks the officiator for my ordination to the office of Priest. I recently realized thanks to my blessed mother that I am in possession of all the original certificates for these ordinances being performed. It seems the clerks in those years just did not record the ordinance being performed at that time.

I would like to get this information corrected on my record, but as being that Aaronic priesthood ordinances are not available in LCR for anyone holding the Melchizedek priesthood it cannot be fixed at the ward or stake level.

Does anyone know who I can contact to get this information recorded for my posterity?

As you state, once you hold the Mechizedek Priesthood, no Aaronic Priesthood ordinance information is publicly listed. How are you determining that your official record does not contain any information for your ordination as a Deacon or Teacher, and is also lacking the Priesthood holder who ordained you a Priest?

If you have questions like this, the proper step would likely be to call the Global Services Department in your area, your local clerk can provide you with the number to call. However, even if they do find something that needs correcting with your Aaronic Priesthood ordinance information, it will still not be accessible to your posterity -- since as you state, the Church doesn't even make this information available to the member themselves. The original certificates in your possession are a much better legacy to pass down to your family members, it indeed is a blessing that your mother preserved them!

Have you thought about putting it on your record in FamilySearch?
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

The interesting thing is that the church does preserve this information on every persons record. If you look at any member of Ward or Stake leadership (Bishopric or Stake Presidencies) "Membership Information" in the LDS Tools app it will show you all records, and those who performed the ordinance, from Deacon to High Priest. This is how I became aware of the unrecorded data on my own membership record.

When I look at my own name in Member Tools, under the Membership Information tab I see every one of my ordinations, including Aaronic Priesthood offices, and I see the date and who performed the ordination. I cannot see the personal information of anyone else. I am not currently serving in a leadership position, as far as LCR is aware.

Aha! Interesting that the website still has a message "Aaronic Priesthood offices are not displayed for members holding the Melchizedek Priesthood.", and the Individual Membership Record likewise does not list my Aaronic Priesthood info. Yet as you both shared, I also can see every Priesthood ordination I've received when I use the Member Tools app.

Has this info always been available via Tools? It's quite possible it's been there for quite a while, and I've just not noticed.

It's always good to stand corrected, and I've learned something new.

For whatever reason, Aaronic Priesthood ordination information has always been available in Member Tools. I believe leaders are able to see it for everyone, and individuals are able to see only their own information.

AP ordinations were not shown on membership records (MLS, LCR, or printed) once a Melchizedek Priesthood ordination was on the record, but the information has always been available at Church headquarters.

Makes sense for what I have seen. I would love to get it corrected at church headquarters but I have no idea who to contact.

I have the same issue.

When I was ordained to be an Elder right before my mission, I was actually ordained by the member of the High council and not my dad. I just noticed it shows my dad’s name as the officiator but he wasn’t the one who spoke or performed the ordination.

I’m wondering who I would need to contact to get that corrected for mine too.

In response to what ordinations show up on your membership information, I do see the other ordinations like deacon , teacher, priest on mine.

I would start with my ward or branch clerk. He is responsible for the accuracy of records in the unit. If he doesn't know what to do, he should counsel with his stake clerk who is responsible for training him. If you were to forward your request to Church Headquarters, they would just route it back to your unit to start the process as this is their responsibility.
