Cyber Fraud and the Elderly

Post by nerskine »

I would like to suggest our church implements a cyber security course for elderly and families to help prevent ID and monetary theft. This could be organized into classes like the self reliance or how to start your own business courses. My elderly parents could greatly benefit from this type of education.

I like this idea. It might be worth bringing it up to your stake president. If you're able to get a class started in your stake and it's successful, your stake president could send it up as a suggestion to the area presidency to implement more widely.

I'm not sure why it would be limited to the elderly. I could see a time when the church does have a cybersecurity class for it's members.

The big thing is that the church is focused on it's mission. It's going to be very careful about "scope creep". That doesn't mean a bishop couldn't use the 5th Sunday for some lessons.

Some class material would be nice, but I note with disappointment the level of activity in our "Family Safety with Technology" forum section.

You might not want to watch it on Sunday, and I don't think The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made it, but BYU TV currently has a show called The Inspectors that educates the watcher on mail-related fraud/scams, while entertaining at the same time. It's not specific to cyberfraud, but cyber crimes are occasionally addressed. You can watch it for free on BYU TV's website or in their app. I don't think any of the episodes address identity theft, but lots of them address money-related scams.
