Closed Captioning for RS General Broadcast

Post by rhauptman »

I am getting so frustrated and don't know how to get help.

Last year I recall vividly how I downloaded the Relief Society General Broadcast and also downloaded a separate file with closed captions, and when we played it for the sisters in our ward at our activity, it worked. I remember because one of the words was a homophone and spelled incorrectly (even though it sounded correct).

I cannot find closed captioning as an option for this year's broadcast. Can you help?

When the church focuses a lot on different languages and ASL for the deaf, but doesn't do closed captioning on other broadcasts, it is very frustrating. It makes my disability (hearing loss) a handicap. I cannot understand what is being said.

And many other people are in the same category as me. (Not to mention that most people who teach classes and speak in Sacrament meeting love to mumble and don't enunciate properly!) Amplifying the volume does not work. I wish people would get that! It just makes the mumbling louder. But it is still mumbling. Like, wouldn't you expect if you heard static, and turned the volume up, the static would just be louder? Of course. Because that's logical. But yet amplification devices are all they offer, instead of asking speakers or teachers to enunciate better.

Perhaps more files will become available as it gets closer to "go" time. Right now, it seems only 1080p is available.

You might try a different viewer. A surprise I got testing an Android TV device using last year's RS video file is that I got captions - despite not downloading the caption files. It wasn't open caption as I could turn it off.

I tested this years file that I downloaded a day or so ago and it doesn't seem to have captions.

I just downloaded the 1080p file. 720p and 360p were also available, but no captions or subtitles.

I notice more file options then we had before. While there's still no subtitle file, I'm finding that VLC can display the captions.

I'd imagine if I re-download the file, I can display captions on the Android TV device I was testing with above.

Edit: I have confirmed, the file I downloaded on 3/13 didn't have captions, but the one downloaded today (3/15) does. But you have to have a viewer that can handle that caption format, like VLC.
