Can a member pay tithing to another unit?

Post by davehilliard »

Can a member pay tithing to another unit instead of where their records currently are? We have a sweet 93 yr old sister that sold her house and moved to an assisted living ctr, and her records went with her. But she very much wants to pay her tithing to her old unit.

Technically the system allows for it with checks/cash. When recording the tithing into the system, you can enter a new donor via member number or even enter non-member info for paying tithing if they aren't a member of that ward. If she wants it recorded, she would probably have to provide her member number to her previous unit as her records being moved out pretty much removes any chance at looking up her member number. Even if she paid tithing in 2024 to her previous ward, her donor statement would be pulled from her ward.

Policy wise, I wouldn't see it as an issue because it's tithing and the main point is an honest tithe gets paid and it goes to the church. It's going to be a little more work for the ward clerk in her old ward.

If you can, let me know how it works. I've never done it for a member in another ward but I have done it for people prior to being baptized and then merged it with their church account when they were baptized and had a member number.

Also, I found a possible way to get her member number I didn't think of when typing that response. In the Finance tab, go to "Participant List" and click "Include "Out of Unit" Participants. If she has paid any donations recently (not sure the timeframe but it's at least several months), her name and MRN should show up with that box checked.

This is similar to the process for missionaries. Their record is in their home ward, but they pay fast offerings through the ward where they're serving:
Fast offerings paid to the ward or branch where you are serving.

Tithing on personal funds received and any income from a business or investments at home should be paid with personal funds through your home ward or through online donations.
