Setup New Clerk Chromebook at Home?

Post by bigswannyd »

I have several new Chromebooks to setup and deploy. The units they will belong to are in a couple different cities several miles apart. I would like to get them all setup at home then deploy to each unit. Does the initial setup require the Chromebook be connected to the church network, or will any Internet connection suffice?

I'm not sure. There's nothing that says it has to be set up at church. However, the "setup" is very minimal as there's not really anything to configure.

Units are probably already enrolled. Look carefully on the label on the package to see what laptop goes to which unit. Anything you attempt to change will only affect your login. There is no shared login and the Guest account resets after logoff. The only thing left is to run updates. There might be something deeper that would affect all users, but I've not found any tools for that. But honestly, I'm not sure what I'd change.

Just installed 2 here a month ago. Setup was truly painless. I would not bother with creating a user account beyond guest. It gets you almost nothing beneficial. Biggest hassel was getting the screen mirroring working as desired and that was relatively minor. Bit of a learning curve on a few other things but not bad. Suggest you do the one closest to you and learn what you are doing. It will probably take you longer to physically move the cables and train the users than it will to do the setup. One quick time saver on start up is click the arrow and NOT the guest icon. Lost a few minutes figuring that one out. You will likely want to create a generic gmail account so the leaders have access to google docs and a shared space. If you have personal gmail accounts be aware you are limited to 3 per recovery phone number. So you may need another number or number for recovery numbers. I moved the ward zoom account address to that email too so there are fewer that need to be kept track of. You might encourage the clerks to move any needed documents to google docs ahead of time as getting stuff moved after from a thumb drive is a bit of a pain.(really want a real computer for this stuff)(but oh well)

Built a stand here to raise monitor for my ward and hold the chrome book over it it so the power button on the chrome book is always easily accessible. The shelf that holds it is pegboard with larger holes so wire connections can be zip tied to it. Legs under the peg board to give clearance for zip ties and for air circulation. It is set up so the whole shelf and chrome book assembly down if the chromebook is needed for a zoom meeting. Simply push main wireless keyboard back under the main monitor stand and set the upper shelf down.
